MSME Ministry expands global collaboration program with Ansys

Five selected startups to leverage Ansys solutions to scale their businesses

(Seoul=News1) Reporter Lee Jeong-hu — The Ministry of SMEs and Startups (MSS) will expand its collaboration with Ansys, a global engineering simulation software developer, to support space and aerospace startups aiming to become “Korea’s SpaceX.”

On the 21st, the ministry held a roundtable at Ansys Korea’s headquarters in Myeong-dong, Jung-gu, Seoul to support startups in the space and aerospace sectors.

At the event, the MSS announced that, through “ASK,” a global corporate collaboration program co-operated with Ansys, it will add five space/aerospace companies to support a total of 25 startups annually starting this year.

Minister Oh Young-joo emphasized, “There are 442 space-industry companies in Korea, many of which are SMEs and startups. It is crucial to support them for the advancement of the space and aerospace fields.”

Ansys CEO Ajei Gopal, visiting Korea, attended the roundtable and said, “Ansys is placing even greater focus on supporting the space industry. We will provide optimized solutions so participating companies can use simulation to develop their products.”

The roundtable was attended by five companies, including three space/aerospace startups newly joining ASK this year—Dexterous Technology, Space&Bean, and Unmanned Exploration Lab—as well as Nania Labs and Hongsworks from other industries.

Headquartered in Pittsburgh, USA, Ansys develops simulation software. For example, in automotive crash testing, simulations can substitute for physical crash tests, significantly reducing pre-commercialization testing costs for startups.

NASA, SpaceX, and Blue Origin—leaders of the global space industry—are among Ansys’s key customers and use a wide range of its simulation tools across the space sector.

Since 2021, the MSS and Ansys have jointly run the ASK program, which has supported 60 startups to date. These companies have collectively raised KRW 38.6 billion in investment and filed 220 intellectual property rights, among other achievements.

At the roundtable, Korean startups partnering with Ansys in space and aerospace reaffirmed their goals and commitment to collaboration. For Ansys, working with technically capable startups facilitates data sharing and the advancement of its solutions.

Cho Nam-seok, CEO of Unmanned Exploration Lab, which develops lunar rovers, said, “Korea is just beginning in the field of space robotics. Sending a rover into space requires extensive simulation, and our collaboration with Ansys will enable more active rover development.” He added, “Our goal is to see our rovers or components used in international space programs, and ultimately to supply a rover for Korea’s planned 2032 lunar exploration.”

Ansys CEO Ajei Gopal responded, “We are honored to support Korea’s outstanding companies with simulation. We will continue to help verify tests that are difficult to conduct in actual space through virtual simulation.”

Kim Hong-bae, CEO of Dexterous Technology, newly joining the ASK program, introduced himself as “a first-generation participant in Korea’s space development since 1992,” and requested support for creating overseas expansion opportunities, noting strong interest from foreign engineers in Korea’s space technologies.

The MSS expressed a strong commitment to supporting the globalization of domestic startups. Minister Oh stated, “Through the ‘Super-Gap Startup 1000+’ project, we selected seven startups in space and aerospace this year. We will continue related support, including the Startup Korea Fund to attract investment into tech startups.”

In cooperation with the Korea Aerospace Research Institute, the MSS also plans to promote a specialized support program within ASK for space and aerospace startups selected for the initiative.

중기부, 앤시스와 글로벌 협업 프로그램 확대

선정된 5개 기업, 앤시스 솔루션 활용해 사업 고도화

(서울=뉴스1) 이정후 기자 = 중소벤처기업부가 '한국의 스페이스X'를 꿈꾸는 우주·항공 스타트업을 지원하기 위해 글로벌 공학 시뮬레이션 소프트웨어 개발 기업 앤시스(Ansys)와의 협력을 확대한다.

중소벤처기업부는 21일 서울 중구 명동 앤시스코리아 본사에서 우주·항공 분야 스타트업을 지원하기 위한 간담회를 개최했다.

이날 중기부는 앤시스와 함께 운영 중인 글로벌 기업 협업 프로그램 'ASK'를 통해 올해부터 우주·항공 분야 5개 사를 추가해 매년 25개 스타트업을 지원하기로 했다고 밝혔다.

오영주 중기부 장관은 "국내에 우주산업 관련 기업이 총 442개 있는데 이 중 상당수가 중소기업과 스타트업"이라며 "우주·항공 분야의 발전을 위해 이들을 지원하는 게 중요하다"고 강조했다.

한국을 방문 중인 아제이 고팔(Ajei Gopal) 앤시스 대표는 이날 간담회에 참석해 "앤시스는 우주 산업을 지원하는 것에 더욱 집중하고 있다"며 "프로그램 참여 기업들이 시뮬레이션을 활용해 제품을 개발할 수 있도록 최적화된 솔루션을 제공하겠다"고 말했다.

간담회에는 올해부터 ASK 프로그램에 참여하는 우주·항공 스타트업 △덱스트러스테크놀러지 △스페이스앤빈 △무인탐사연구소 3개 사를 비롯해 다른 산업 분야로 참여했던 '나니아랩스' 및 '홍스웍스' 등 총 5개 사가 참석했다.

앤시스는 미국 피츠버그에 본사를 둔 시뮬레이션 소프트웨어 개발 기업이다. 예를 들어 자동차 충돌 테스트의 경우 실제 자동차 대신 시뮬레이션을 이용해 충돌 테스트를 대신할 수 있다. 스타트업 입장에서는 상용화 전 단계인 시험 단계에서 투입되는 비용을 크게 줄일 수 있다.

글로벌 우주 산업을 이끄는 NASA, 스페이스X, 블루오리진 등이 모두 앤시스의 주요 고객사다. 이들은 우주 산업 전반에 다양한 시뮬레이션 소프트웨어를 이용하고 있다.

중기부와 앤시스는 2021년부터 ASK 프로그램을 함께 진행하고 있다. 지금까지 60개의 스타트업을 지원했으며 해당 기업들은 총 386억 원의 투자를 유치하고 220건의 지식재산권을 출원하는 등 성과를 달성했다.

간담회에서는 앤시스와 손잡고 우주·항공 분야 협력에 나선 국내 스타트업들이 자사의 목표와 협력 의지를 다졌다. 앤시스 입장에서는 기술력을 갖춘 스타트업과 협력해 데이터를 공유하고 자사의 솔루션을 고도화할 수 있다.

달 탐사 로봇(로버)을 개발하는 조남석 무인탐사연구소 대표는 "우주 로봇 개발은 우리나라가 이제 막 시작하고 있는 분야"라며 "로버를 우주로 보내기까지 많은 시뮬레이션이 필요한데, 앤시스와의 협력으로 로버 개발을 더 활발하게 진행할 수 있을 것"이라고 기대감을 나타냈다.

조 대표는 "우리가 만든 로버나 로버 부품 등을 국제적인 우주 프로그램에 활용될 수 있게 하는 것이 목표"라며 "최종적으로 우리나라가 2032년에 실시할 예정인 달 탐사에 우리 로버를 납품하려고 한다"고 말했다.

아제이 고팔 앤시스 대표는 "한국의 멋진 기업들을 대상으로 시뮬레이션을 지원할 수 있어 영광이다"며 "실제 우주에서 시험하기 어려운 테스트를 가상현실에서 검증할 수 있도록 하는 시뮬레이션을 앞으로도 열심히 지원하겠다"고 화답했다.

ASK 프로그램에 신규 참여하는 김홍배 덱스트러스테크놀러지 대표는 "1992년부터 우주개발에 참여한 대한민국 우주개발 1세대"라고 자신을 소개하며 "국내 연구진이 개발한 우주 기술에 대해 해외 엔지니어들의 관심이 많은데 해외 진출 기회를 만들어 줬으면 한다"고 요청했다.

중기부도 국내 스타트업의 글로벌화를 위해 적극적으로 지지하겠다는 의지를 내비쳤다. 오 장관은 "초격차 스타트업 1000+ 프로젝트를 통해 올해 우주·항공 분야 스타트업 7개를 선정했다"며 "기술 스타트업의 투자 유치를 위한 스타트업코리아펀드 등 관련 지원 등을 이어가겠다"고 말했다.

중기부는 한국항공우주연구원과 협력해 'ASK' 프로그램에 선발된 우주·항공 스타트업을 위한 특화 지원 프로그램도 추진할 계획이다.
